Wine – 2005 Mezzo Giorno Nero D’Avola Shiraz

05142007b.jpgOK, value wine time. My friend David brought a bottle of this over a while ago and it caught me completely off guard. $14?! A Sicilian Shiraz?! Good?! Well, that’s just fantastic.

This is an unusual bottle of wine and for the price?.. Well, it’s unusually good. It has a nose that shows spicy cherry laced with licorice and pepper. Its flavours are all ripe dark, juicy cherries with a big lash from a licorice stick… and a tasty finish that verges on dark cherry syrup.

A great value.

$14.99 here in BC at LDB stores.

i love the nero d'avola. i fell in love with it in siracusa, sicilia, not far from avola. a perfect wine for hot summer evenings. i prefer it to most any shiraz i've ever had; honestly, it's one of my favorite varietals, period. sadly, the selections on this side of atlantic (or mediterranean for that matter) are usually a little thin. thankfully, because the nero does not have the same obvious market following, it usually is imported and sold as mediocre table wine, but can readily compete with wines in its price-range making it a good buy. nonetheless, no where near as good a buy as the limited vintages we were drinking for 10-20 euros a bottle in siracusa last spring. good times.
